Dublin-based five-piece September Girls brought together darkened, noise-pop melodies awash with garage rock overtones in the same vein as Veronica Falls and Vivian Girls. The all-girl outfit was formed in 2011 and took influences from ’90s shoegazers My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain, as well as Phil Spector-inspired lush harmonies, which rose above their fuzzy distortion and thudding drums. Their reverb-soaked vocal melodies were offset by gritty guitars and droning organs that drew comparisons with tourmates PINS. A handful of singles were released on various indie labels throughout 2012, including a cassette on PINS’ own label, Haus of Pins, and a 7″ single on California-based label Matinée, before Fortuna Pop picked them up. In 2013 the band returned to Dublin where they wrote and recorded their debut full-length album, ‘Cursing the Sea’.

Montreal guitar and drum duo Solids see their debut album Blame Confusion released on 18th February via Fat Possum Records. To celebrate, the two-piece have announced a mammoth US & European tour, which calls at Birmingham’s Hare & Hounds on Wed 7th May 2014.

Formed by Xavier Germain-Poitras (guitar) and Louis Guillemette (drums), Solids has been built on the premise that melody never shines as much as when it is forced to fight its way through many layers of distortion and feedback. Blame Confusion, recorded by Adrian Popovich at Mountain City Studio (We Are Wolves, Sam Roberts, The Dears), stays true to that idea.

Influenced by bands from the 90s, like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr and Superchunk, their first EP released in 2010, Generic Dogs, united fans of chaotic choruses under the banner of their intense rock. Solids has already played SXSW, Osheaga, Pop Montreal and The Fest and now an extensive North American tour announcement will see the band hit the road in tandem with their February release.

Pete Dixon, Andy Bullock and Ralph Morton make up the aptly named Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam, whose stripped-down, bass-less set up enables them to bash out driving, gloriously widescreen alt. pop anthems at an alarming rate. With tracks evoking the best eras of Sebadoh and ‘Trail of Dead sivved through a modern, post-dreampop colander.
