On 29th August 2019, Jack Peñate will release a new single ‘Prayer’. The single release comes almost exactly a decade after the release of Jack’s last full length LP, the highly acclaimed Everything Is New.

‘Prayer’ is one of Jack’s most honest, vulnerable and soulful songs to date. It is co-produced by Jack and Inflo, known for his work with the likes of Little Simz (on Grey Area), Karen O / Danger Mouse (Lux Prima), and Michael Kiwanuka (Love & Hate). On meeting, the pair hit it off immediately and an instant creative partnership led to ‘Prayer’ being written and recorded in just one day. It was recorded in a converted garage studio in Oxford, where Jack was living at the time, before being finished in XL Recordings’ New York studio with producer Alex Epton.

For the ‘Prayer’ video, Jack has collaborated with world-renowned British visual artist Eddie Peake. The video was shot in one take on an iPhone at London’s Royal Academy Of Arts. It’s the start of an ongoing creative relationship between musician and artist.

In Jack’s own words: “Prayer was made for and with my family and friends. It’s a piece about the unifying nature of loss and the thread of hope that survives throughout.”

Jack has released two full length albums to date. If his debut album, 2007’s Matinee, was a guitar-led explosion of adolescent energy and innocence that burst out of a fertile London music scene, it’s 2009 follow up, Everything Is New, was a total recalibration, successfully bringing Brazilian Tropicala, Krautrock, New Orleans marching bands, Bashment, Afrobeat, lo-fi Hop Hop, Gospel, Reggaeton and Phily Soul into the mix for a record described by The Guardian as “the really startling reinvention of 2009…”.

The extended hiatus between records has seen Jack embark on a decade long musical apprenticeship to hone his production skills. Jack cites Everything Is New as “undoubtedly the best record I could have made at that point”, but he also became aware of the limitations of his own production skills through the process. Inspired by his collaboration with close friend Paul Epworth on Everything Is New but aware that he couldn’t have made that record on his own, he set out to perfect his craft and give himself full creative independence, inspired by the kind of producer-artists he’d loved since his teens such as Todd Rundgren and Arthur Russell. “I finally feel like I’ve got all the tools to do this on my own,” says Jack. “but also the confidence to bring in outside collaborators, when the moment is right, as equals”. The first result of this new approach is ‘Prayer’. There’s much more to come.

Throughout the intervening years, spent in various cities around the world and away from the spotlight, Jack has continued to write, record and experiment, always maintaining his own studio set up as a refuge to return to. The period has also been punctuated with a handful of key musical moments. They include 2012’s YouTube-only release ‘No One Lied’, recorded and shot in one take at Peñate’s home, 2018’s 19 minute ‘A Thousand Faces’ mixtape and contributions to David Byrne’s 2018 American Utopia album.
