This Week: Gig Roundup 20th – 26th March

Coming up this week in Birmingham we have Glasgow synth-pop duo Prides at The Flapper on Monday. Thursday sees rhythm’n’blues band King Salami & The Cumberland Three at The Sunflower Lounge, and on Friday Ed Geater plays Hare & Hounds as the last stop on his debut UK tour. On Sunday fresh-faced Manchester four-piece Dantevilles play The Sunflower Lounge. Check out the full listings below:

MONDAY 20TH MARCH

Glasgow-based duo Prides return with their latest single ‘Are You Ready’, continuing their natural move towards a well-rounded, guitar/drum led sound, complimented by elegant electronic touches. Prides have consistently proved themselves to be band with big songs, and equally big crowds. 2 years ago the band played the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony to 7.5 million people on BBC1. Support comes from alternative rock four-piece Twin Wild and indie band The Young.

Hailed as Britain’s very own answer to the likes of One Republic, Maroon 5 or The Script, Club Drive’s latest single is an unapologetic slice of pure pop brilliance. Already making a name for themselves across social media and with a fast-expanding – and very fervent – fanbase, the quartet have captured the interest of Radio 1’s BBC Introducing team where ‘Dangerous’ was featured across the Introducing network as ‘Track Of The Week’. Support comes from indie pop trio Idolising Nova and catchy indie rock band Idle Frets.

Bath-based five-piece Bad Sounds‘ single ‘Avalanche’ was selected by BBC Radio 1 Annie Mac as her track of the week. Released in April 2016, the single was co-produced by Duncan Mills (Peace/Spector), fusing cheerful pop hooks, fuzzy guitar lines and an undeniably addictive chorus, bringing sounds of the 70′s and 80′s into the 90′s Brit-Pop era, with a twist. Support comes from Birmingham duo Social State whose songs are a mix of various genres including indie, hip-hop and pop.

THURSDAY 23RD MARCH

King Salami & The Cumberland Three + The Good Water + Ideal Club @ The Sunflower Lounge

This is London’s greatest and most sensational rhythm’n’blues-punk band. And this is a band that truly represents London, being a mongrel mix of Caribbean, France, Japan and Spain. With a repertoire influenced by many of the great songs of the ’50s and ’60s made to sound fresh and new to modern ears, you won’t be able to help but move your feet when The Cumberland Three are blasting out of your speakers. Support comes from gritty rhythm & blues duo The Good Water and punk band Ideal Club.

Ed Geater is back in 2017 with a headline show at the Hare & Hounds, serving as the last stop of his debut UK tour. The gig follows the success of his Unseen EP release launch at Mama Roux’s in October, which received rave reviews from CounteractBab Mag and Brum Radio. Ed will be playing material from both EPs released in 2016 by London label Music Mandi, plus some new songs, and is set to be joined by friends on stage for a host of collaborations. Support from acoustic hip-hop duo Bear, soulful singer-songwriter Dee Ajayi, singer-songwriter Amy Louise Ellis and DJs Jack Barber and The Deviant til late.

Mad Dog Mcrea blend a unique mixture of folk rock, pop, gypsy jazz, bluegrass and ‘shake your ass’ music. From self-penned songs of adventure, drinking, love and life, to traditional songs of gypsies, fairies, legless pirates and black flies – Mad Dog never fail to capture their audience with their infectious songs. Support comes from bluesy rock band The Infusion.

Liverpool’s swaggering psychedelic outfit The Vryll Society have announced the release of their latest single ‘Sacred Flight’ via Deltasonic Records, kicking off what promises to be a very productive and exciting year culminating in the release of their widely anticipated debut album. The psych-pop quintet’s unique eclectic sound has already seen them heavily tipped by BBC Introducing and championed by the likes of Huw Stephens (Radio 1), Phil Taggart (Radio 1) and Steve Lamacq (BBC 6 Music). Support comes from Midlands indie five-piece Violet and psychedelic alternative band Grim Fiction.

A fresh-faced, four-piece band emitting new music from the home they call Manchester. Christmas is a time for giving and we’ve certainly not failed in lining up some fantastic musical treats for you this week! We’ve got a sold out farewell gig from Suffolk rockers Canterbury, a headline show from local noisemakers Hyena and a musical showcase from the superbly talented Mahalia! WEDNESDAY 17th DECEMBER 

Canterbury + The Young @ The Flapper *SOLD OUT*

After 7 successful years, Suffolk rock quartet Canterbury have decided to call it a day, embarking on a farewell UK tour which calls at The Flapper this Wednesday. Fantastic album reviews from the likes of Kerrang (KKKK) and Rocksound (9/10)  helped build the band’s popularity through 2012/13, plus their own sold out UK tours and support slots with You Me At SixThe Blackout and Deaf Havana. This very special night will be a celebration of the band’s achievements to date and should not be missed! Support comes from local four-piece The Young.

FRIDAY 19th DECEMBER 

Hyena + The Mighty Young + Electric @ The Sunflower Lounge

Telford based Hyena, formerly known as Weatherbird, released their impressive debut single ‘Mental Home’ under their new guise in November. The single, issued by Red Venom was produced by Royal Blood producer Tom Dalgety who focused on the band’s Nirvana-esque surging dynamic and hoarse power to mesmeric effect. The band, who have recently toured with Aussie thrashpop group DZ Deathrays, have been compared to the likes of Darlia and Drenge and are sure to follow in their footsteps. Support comes from garage rock duo The Mighty Young  and local racketmakers Electric. More info available here.

3 Daft Monkeys @ The Oobleck

Following their rip-roaring set at the Hare & Hounds last year, the Cornish gypsy-folk band return to Birmingham to play The Oobleck. 2013 saw the release of their sixth studio album Of Stones and Bones, their most story-led and theatrical to date, sheer joy of life mixed with their infectious dancing rhythms will leave you breathless, enthralled and exhilarated. Mahalia + Joel Baker + Interior Castle @ The Sunflower Lounge

Mahalia and Birmingham Promoters team up to bring you the first in a very special series of events we’re calling ‘Mahalia Presents’ in which the Leicester songstress invites her dearest and favourite artists to the stage for a most excellent night of music! After two years spent supporting the likes of Ed SheeranEmeli SandeNick MulveyLaura Mvula and Kate Tempest,  Mahalia has grown into an exciting, soulful and vibrant performer. For this night, she brings with her Nottingham born songsmith Joel Baker and Australian/English female duo Interior Castle. Tickets available here.
