Watch: The Staves – ‘Teeth White’

June 19, 2015 in News

The Staves are pleased to unveil the video for their new single ‘Teeth White’.

Shot at Le Bar à Bulles in Paris and directed by La Blogotheque, ‘Teeth White’ is the latest track to be lifted from The Staves’ acclaimed second album, If I Was. The track was produced by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.

Teeth White is a song about feeling like no matter what you do, it’s never good enough. It’s really a song about the frustration of being held back and not being free. We were so excited to team up with the the wonderful folks of La Blogotheque once more to create this video. We would like to thank all the people in Paris who volunteered to be in it with us!

If I Was is out now through Atlantic Records. It marks The Staves’ first Top 20 UK album and has received high praise on both sides of the Atlantic.

“Songs of love, loss and heartache, the 12 tracks here see the Staves shake off their home-counties roots and go stellar.” – Sunday Times

“Every once in a while, an album comes along that just breaks you. For me so far this year, that has been the Staves’ sophomore album, If I Was, an unexpected master class in both vulnerability and resilience.” – Vulture

The Staves to play The Institute Birmingham

April 13, 2015 in News

Following their previous sell-out show, and the release of their Top 20 second album If I Was, The Staves return to The Institute Birmingham on Sun 1st November 2015.

Just one listen to Blood I Bled EP will tell you The Staves have changed since their debut album was released in 2012. Of course, the sisters haven’t abandoned their beautiful, signature close harmonies, but they have bolstered them with a clutch of multi-layered, hugely ambi-tious songs, recorded with the scale and confidence that can only come after three years on the road.

The aforementioned ‘Blood I Bled’ opens The Staves’ second album If I Was, and was indeed the first track written, recorded, and released from the album. Initially, the song lay dormant while they performed all over the world, including appearing alongside Mumford & Sons during their Glastonbury headlining slot in 2013 and several tours with American cult heroes Bon Iver. Having formed strong friendships with the latter band’s founder Justin Vernon and his assembled gaggle of players, the sisters were invited to his April Base studio in Wisconsin to work on whatever music they had in a relaxed, idyllic setting.

The resulting album is as stunning as the snow-covered landscape it was recorded in; at once deeply personal to each sister, fuelled by heartbreak and individual turbulence, it’s also full of hope, redemption and positivity for an uncertain future.

The Staves (Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor) released their debut album Dead & Born & Grownback in 2012 to widespread critical acclaim. The sisters’ ability to deliver pin-point harmonies alongside exceptional lyrics and musicianship evoked as much praise on record as applause on the stage.

Blood I Bled EP is the first public outing of new tracks written by The Staves and recorded at April Base with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver producing. The title track ‘Blood I Bled’ is taken from the forthcoming studio album produced by Justin Vernon and features a full supporting cast of his Bon Iver band-mates. Resolutely confident and deeply emotional, there’s a heightened and supremely focused sense of drama and atmosphere in these new songs and recordings.

“Prepare to be blown away by beautiful female harmonies, acoustic gentleness and a sound that is nothing less than flawless.”
