This Week: Gig Roundup 10th – 16th November

We have another busy week of gigs coming up , including a sold out show from critically acclaimed poet, playwright and novelist Kate Tempest, a performance from revived and re-energised rock quartet Solemn Sun and a visit from the ‘future of hip-hop’ Shabazz Palaces. Check out all the info below…

MONDAY 10th NOVEMBER 

Shabazz Palaces + MoD + Leftfoot DJs @ Hare & Hounds

Described as “the future of hip-hop”, Shabazz Palaces are a Seattle-based experimental hip-hop group led by Ishmael Butler, aka Palaceer Lazaro (formerly Butterfly of jazz–hip hop group Digable Planets) and multi-instrumentalist Tendai “Baba” Maraire. With support from Birmingham’s very own MoD and Leftfoot DJs, this gig is not one to be missed! TUESDAY 11th NOVEMBER 

Simply Dylan @ The Glee Club 

Liverpool based artist John O’Connell will be taking Simply Dylan – his personal exploration and celebration of the rich and diverse work of Bob Dylan – along with band across the UK for the very first time this November. This is no ordinary interpretation of Bob Dylan, this is a remarkable and exceptional project which promises to delight Dylan fans young and old. Tickets are available here

The Lost Brothers + Lisa O’Neill + Franklin & Jones @ Hare & Hounds

Irish duo The Lost Brothers recently returned to Liverpool, the birthplace of the band, to record the first of a new trilogy with Bill Ryder-Jones, solo artist and former guitarist of local heroes The Coral. Now heading out on a UK tour to celebrate, support comes from Domino’s Lisa O’Neill and locals Franklin & Jones. Get your tickets here.

Solemn Sun + Youth Man + Lime @ The Sunflower Lounge

Earlier this year, folk-punks Jim Lockey and The Solemn Sun found themselves at a junction, having released two full length albums under the moniker, the band opted to lay their previous works to rest and regroup, reinventing themselves as Solemn Sun, an ambitious rock outfit. The band play The Sunflower Lounge with strong support from two fantastic local bands: Youth Man and LimeTickets can be found here.

THURSDAY 13th NOVEMBER 

Marika Hackman + Howard James Kenny @ The Sunflower Lounge 

Having been described as “the lovechild of Nico and Joanna Newsom” by NYLON and releasing a series of hugely revered singles and EPs over the last year, Marika Hackman calls at The Sunflower Lounge this November, her largest headline UK tour to date, with the addition of her newly formed live band. SATURDAY 15th NOVEMBER 

Bad Grammar + Fauxchisels + Dong Fang + The Scribers @ The Sunflower Lounge 

Manchester’s Bad Grammar create fuzzy, riff infused pop jams. The two-piece consisting of Ben Forrester & Lucy Brown have recently released a new EP titled Forced Fun via Flatpack Records. The duo have had recent play on Radio 1 and features in NME Radar & Artrocker New Blood alongside being personally selected to play Y Not Festival by none other than Andrew W.K. With support coming from Fauxchisels, Dong Fang and The Scribers, this gig is not to be skipped on! Tickets can be found here.

SUNDAY 16th NOVEMBER 

Kate Tempest @ Hare & Hounds *SOLD OUT*

Birmingham Promoters are delighted to announce they’ll be teaming up with Leftfoot to bring the wonderful Kate Tempest to the Hare & Hounds Birmingham. She started out when she was 16, rapping at strangers on night buses and pestering emcees to let her on the mic at raves. Ten years later she is a published playwright, novelist, poet and respected recording artist. Her debut album Everybody Down has finally hit the shelves – real and virtual – to ubiquitous acclaim.

We have a many a musical treat for you all this week. Catch two massive bands both born out of Glasgow appearing at The Sunflower Lounge. As well as local heroes playing their first hometown show in Wolverhampton for 18 months and a living legend who has previously played for Kyuss and Queens on the Stone Age. Have a gander below and see which takes your fancy.

MONDAY 2ND JUNE

Baby Strange + Dumb + Juice @ The Sunflower Lounge

After slots at Radio 1 Big Weekend in their hometown of Glasgow, T in the Park and The Great Escape as well as support slots with Palma Violets and The Vaccines, Baby Strange will be stopping by The Sunflower Lounge on Monday night. Having earned a reputation for a raucous live show and with strong local support from Dumb and Juice, make sure to get your tickets here.

TUESDAY 3RD JUNE

Paws + Virals + Furrow @ The Sunflower Lounge

We are hooking up with Counteract Magazine to present Galswegion three piece Paws at The Sunflower Lounge this Tuesday night. The band have an impressive support slot list featuring  Japandroids, Bleached, We Are Scientists, The Cribs, Mates Of State, No Age, Wavves and Ty Segall. Make sure to catch them showcasing tracks from new album ‘Youth Culture Forever’, with support from Virals and Furrow; tickets available here

Howling Bells + Climbing Boys @ Hare & Hounds

If you are headed King’s Heath way Tuesday night instead, be sure to catch the stunning Australian four-piece Howling Bells at Hare & Hounds. They be sure to play tracks from new album ‘Heartstrings’ set for release on June 2nd. This hotly anticipated record comes after the group severed ties with old record label and began to work with Catherine J Marks and Alan Moulder on a new ‘fuller and grungier’ sound. FRIDAY 6TH JUNE

Forest + Only Shadows + Holy @ Hare & Hounds

If you are looking for a fun way to spend your Friday night, why not head to Hare & Hounds and catch indie Cambridge lads Forest. After the release of acclaimed EP ‘Wisdom Tusk’ in March, this five piece have been causing a stir appearing in many ‘Ones To watch’ list as well as praise from The Guardian. This young group are set for a busy Summer, make sure you don’t miss out and see them at the start of it all in King’s Heath. With local support from Only Shadows and Holy, get your tickets here.

SATURDAY 7TH JUNE

God Damn + Women + Weatherbird + The Scribers @ The Slade Rooms

Birmingham Promoters are teaming up with Brum Notes to present God Damn in their hometown Wolverhampton at The Slade Rooms on Saturday night. Having recently signed to One Little Indian Records and the release of latest single ‘Shoe Prints in the Dust’, the boys want to celebrate with a local show to remember. Nick Oliveri @ The Bull’s Head, Moseley

Former member Kyuss and Queens on the Stone Age, and a current member for Mondo Generator,Bl’astMoistboyz and The Dwarves, Nick Oliveri will be playing a solo acoustic set at The Institute this Saturday. He will be showcasing songs from both old albums and new record ‘Leave Me Alone’, which featured guitar solos from the likes of  Phil Campbell (Motorhead), Dean Ween (Ween/Moistboyz) and Stephen Haas (Moistboyz). Little Barrie + Gil De Ray @ The Sunflower Lounge

If a blend of rock, blues, garage and soul is more your thing, head down to The Sunflower Lounge for Little Barrie. They will be playing songs from new album ‘Shadow’. Shortly before recording the record, the band supported the likes of The Stone RosesCharles BradleyDinosaur JrKasabian and Primal Scream. Peter Shoulder + Jessica Mary York + Nix Dadry @ The Yardbird
