The Struts to play The Oobleck Birmingham

October 28, 2014 in News

An invigorating breath of fresh air on a stagnant rock scene, indie rockers The Struts released their debut album Everybody Wants in July 2014.

A quintessentially English proposition, The Struts mix the flamboyance of Queen in their hard partying early 70’s pomp, with the supercharged wit and youthful energy of Supergrass or The Libertines. A band who proudly stand apart from the crowd and steadfastly refuse to chase the latest trends and fads, The Struts aren’t afraid to plough their own furrow and have the tunes to back it up. They’ve built their loyal fan base through fanatical word of mouth, blistering live shows and monstrous hooks that steadfastly refuse to leave your brain.

A combination of much-missed old-fashioned showmanship, stadium sized tunes and dazzling musicianship, The Struts are here to inject a rich shot of colour into UK guitar music’s currently grey landscape.

Listen: Superfood – ‘Mood Bomb’

September 16, 2014 in News

Superfood release their new single, ‘Mood Bomb’, on the 3rd November 2014. It is taken from their forthcoming debut album, Don’t Say That, also released 3rd November through Infectious Music.

Don’t Say That builds on all the band’s early promise from those initial EPs and singles (Bubbles/Melting/TV/Right On Satellite) with a fully-realised collection of melody-heavy, guitar-driven songs.  ‘Mood Bomb’ is an intelligently crafted indie-rock tune, stamped with Superfood’s natural ear for instant hooks but delivered with a force and depth that gives fair suggestion that this British band aren’t merely of the moment, but in it for the long haul.

“[Superfood] tug on a melodic thread that stretches from Blur right back to The Beatles” – The Guardian

SUPERFOOD & HONEYBLOOD PLAY THE OOBLECK BIRMINGHAM AS PART OF THE NME NEW BREED TOUR ON FRI 31ST OCTOBER 2014. TICKETS AVAILABLE FROM  HERE.

Black Lips announce Birmingham gig

July 18, 2014 in News

If Black Lips’ bipolarity runs on a touring vs. recording-an-album spectrum, then the previous year was the mother of all manic spells. After a spring and summer running the usual festival circuit in North America and Europe, the Lips embarked on a two-month fall tour of the Middle East. They were tailed by Georgia rock-doc royalty Bill Cody, of Athens, GA – Inside/Out fame, who filmed the band playing for kids in Tunis and Cairo who had just overthrown their government, kids in Iraq who barely have a government, and kids in Dubai whose government is richer than God (and might control a genie).

Recording for new album, Underneath the Rainbow,  was split between New York with Thomas Brenneck and Nashville with the the Black Keys’ Patrick Carney. Early internet conjecture, based around on the album’s lead single ‘Boys in the Wood’, Carney’s choice of a country studio in Nashville, and an offhand reference to roots music, pegged Underneath the Rainbow’s sound as a blend of southern rock with throwback C&W and blues. Which is a weird description for a record containing the first Black Lips’ song with a prominent synth (“Funny”), and even less apt for an overall album that owes just as much to the kiwi pop of New Zealand’s South Island and the Chicago South Side’s Crucial Conflict as it does the standard American South. “They got it all wrong,” says Jared, “they were asking ‘Is there a “radical departure” or “new direction” on this album?’ so I said, no it’s still roots music, which is what we’ve been doing from the start and which all rock and pop music derives from.”

“Although this is a new direction as far as it having more of a commercial sound,” adds Cole.

“Honestly, that synth getting in there was a fluke.”
