Introducing: Joe Fox

October 10, 2016 in Introducing

It’s his dedication to craft and a total disregard for trends that makes Joe Fox’s voice unique in the landscape of 2016. A student of every great songwriter from the Beatles to Bob Marley, he brings a classic structure to the mind’s eye of a listless and disenfranchised child of the inner city.

“Rewind to last year and Joe Fox was still best known (if known at all to some) for his vocal work on much of A$AP Rocky’s 2015 album At.Long.Last.A$AP, a collaboration that came about after A$AP himself discovered the talented musician busking on the streets of London.

Fast forward to 2016 and Joe Fox is now standing on his own two feet, showcasing his solo abilities through the release of two stunning singles. The first to drop was ‘Like Jesus’, a beautifully crafted guitar track accompanied by Fox’s soulful voice. In a matter of days, Joe Fox spoiled us again with his second single, ‘Autopilot’. The track stays true to Fox’s habitual stripped-back nature, consisting only of acoustic guitar and raw vocals. The simplicity of the track helps make it feel instantly familiar, which is testament to Fox’s ability to connect with the listener.” – The Line of Best Fit

She Makes War to play Ort Cafe Birmingham

March 17, 2016 in News

Queen of gloom-pop She Makes War is back with her much-anticipated third album Direction Of Travel, out on April 8th 2016 via The state51 Conspiracy.

Direction Of Travel was recorded in the winter months of 2014/15 in Bristol, Brighton and London. Produced by She Makes War, mixed by Dan Austin (DovesPixies) and featuring guest appearances from Tanya Donelly and Mark Chadwick, most of the instruments on the album were played by Laura herself, added to by a cast of supporting musician friends including Clive Deamer and Andy Sutor on drums, The McCarricks and Nicole Robson on strings and Cajita on piano.

The songs on Direction Of Travel reveal widescreen ambition, deepening the glittery, grunge-inflected guitar driven sound of She Makes War’s back catalogue while exploring new worlds of cinematic orchestration and heartfelt, confessional songwriting. The songs vibrate with sadness but the album’s message is hopeful – we can all become strong enough to reclaim ourselves, to escape from suffocating situations, process sadness and sorrow and emerge all the stronger for the experience.

At the end of 2015, She Makes War teased listeners with the release of five track EP Disarm:15, which received praise from the likes of The Line of Best FitGigwise and Songwriting Magazine. Laura has also received support from BBC 6Music’s Lauren Laverne and Tom Robinson and has toured with artists such as tUnE-yArDsGruff RhysNadine Shah and Suede.

Ben Caplan to play Ort Cafe Birmingham

November 13, 2015 in News

A charismatic charmer and a smasher of pianos. A madman and an earnest poet. A strummer of delicate chords and a lover of bent and broken melodies. Ben Caplan is not any one thing. As he releases his second album, he’s already gained a following in more than a dozen countries from Australia to Europe and across North America. It’s no surprise. Caplan is simply unforgettable; with his huge beard and unruly mane, he is as visually striking as he is aurally compelling. His rough and textured tones cut through crowded halls; an enormous voice, roaring louder than raucous crowds. The microphone looks almost superfluous. But looks are deceiving; once he has your attention, Caplan can croon smoother than a glass of single malt whisky, pouring beauty into a harsh world.

Inspired in part by Eastern European and Jewish folk traditions, Ben Caplan mixes older musical sensibilities with his own soul, straight from his hairy heart. Lyrically, you’ve not heard the like before. Often edgy and dark, Caplan holds a mirror up to show us our nasty bits, singing about the ugliness and showing us that this darkness is the root of the sublime.

His new album, Birds with Broken Wings, explodes with sounds both ancient and modern, with more than 30 musicians and even more instruments, combining acoustic sounds from around the world. It’s all smoothly blended by the hottest international production team around. It’s uncharted territory, and Caplan’s leading the way.
