Lewis Watson to play O2 Institute Birmingham

March 27, 2017 in News

Oxford-based singer/songwriter Lewis Watson recently returned with latest song ‘Little Light’ taken from his second album Midnight, released earlier this month through Cooking Vinyl. The 360-degree video, made in partnership with MelodyVR, shows Lewis and his band performing the track on an East London rooftop.

The dramatic new track is a beautiful return from the hugely acclaimed 25 year old. Rich with emotion, Lewis wears his heart on his sleeve in this gorgeous love song. The gleaming guitar lines, crystalline melodies and captivating vocals showcase Lewis at his best.

With Midnight Lewis has developed his much-adored acoustic-pop sound into something altogether more ambitious, yet even more affecting. Drawing upon inspiration from a disparate range of influences including Death Cab For CutieColdplay and Bon Iver, the album expands Lewis Watson’s musical world far beyond his debut. It also features a duet with Lucy Rose on the achingly emotional ‘slumber’.

Gabrielle Aplin, Lewis Watson & Hannah Grace live

February 2, 2016 in News

“Effortlessly switching form sultry, hypnotic sounds to more upbeat jazz melodies, Gabrielle Aplin’s second album is exactly what we wanted to hear.” – 5/5, Glamour

Following the positive reception that greeted her new album Light Up The DarkGabrielle Aplin approaches a major UK and Ireland headline tour that includes a Birmingham show at O2 Institute!

Light Up The Dark adds a new chapter to a career that has already delivered 80 million Spotify streams, 90 million YouTube views, 1.5 million sales of single, and #1 chart positions in the UK and Australia over the course of her debut album English Rain. Her second album has already received extensive Radio 1 support with a playlist for the title track as well as Huw Stephens’ Hottest Record followed by a second playlist for the recent single ‘Sweet Nothing’.

The new album was inspired by Joni Mitchell and the production on Feist’s The Reminder. “Her voice is just here, right at the front, and everything sits around it perfectly,” says Aplin. “I’ve also become much more comfortable writing songs about other people’s stories as well as my own, much of which is inspired by travelling and everything I’ve seen since my first album.”

Gabrielle’s recent underplay show at London’s Wilton’s Music Hall sold-out in less than 24 hours. The Evening Standard’s review drew comparisons with Florence + The Machine and Feist, and concluded that it was “A mini-triumph; greater ones will come.”

Lewis Watson to play The Institute Birmingham

March 31, 2014 in News

“Looks set to replicate Ed Sheeran’s success… his emotionally open storytelling qualities will resonate with the A Team singer’s huge fanbase.” – Sunday Times

In 2012, Lewis Watson self-released his debut EP It’s Got Four Sad Songs On It, BTW after establishing a devoted online fan-base. It topped the iTunes singer-songwriter chart on the first day of release, outselling the likes of Adele, Madonna and Ed Sheeran in the process, and landed the then nineteen-year-old singer-songwriter a deal with Warner Bros. Records.

Lewis’s profile has continued to grow exponentially ever since. After headlining London’s Koko and playing two sets at last summer’s Glastonbury, Lewis is now set to release his long-awaited debut album The Morning on 16th June.

The album demonstrates Lewis’s growing powers as a songwriter. It combines fully-realised reworkings of select songs that emerged as sketches on his early EPs together with the best of the sixty unreleased songs that he wrote last year. The newer material – including the first single ‘Stay’ – takes Lewis’s stripped-back guitar-and-voice roots and constructs a richer, more textured sound around him.

Lewis’s shows grow in size with each tour. with the profile of his audience similarly evolving in new directions. He’ll follow release of The Morning with his biggest headline tour to date which includes The Institute Birmingham on Fri 3rd October.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich plays The Institute

May 19, 2013 in News

The first thing you notice is the voice. Haunting and sublimely otherworldly, it stops you in your tracks proving that sometimes the intoxicating simplicity of a single voice is all you need to make an impact. With Benjamin Francis Leftwich, that hypnotic, breathy voice is the reason for it all. Not just your average singer-songwriter then.

Growing up on a diet of Rolling Stones and Nina Simone, Benjamin discovered Bob Dylan and Elliot Smith in his teens, starting work as a solo artist at 18 and beginning to write what now makes up his debut album Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm.

The breathtaking results were well worth waiting for. Inspired by the likes of Ryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire and Sigur Ros, Benjamin took his time creating a sound that is truly his, that reveals a little more of himself with every single breath and moment.

Released to much critical acclaim, the album was an instant Top 20 hit in the UK Album Chart, and enjoyed heavy radio support from the likes of Radio 1, 6Music and Xfm. A huge number of festival appearances followed including Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, Green Man, Bestival, and many more, plus a massive 28 date sold out UK tour. This May, Ben and his band embark on a short run of headline shows including Birmingham’s The Institute and his biggest headline show to date at The Forum in London.

New Lewis Watson video ‘Into the Wild’

February 16, 2013 in News

Lewis Watson has revealed his brand new video for ‘Into the Wild’. The track is taken from his upcoming EP ‘The Wild’, set for release on 26th March 2013 (currently available for pre-order here).

Following his previous sold out show at The Rainbow, we are super pleased to be welcoming Lewis Watson back to Birmingham very soon, this time to The Institute on Mon 4th March.

Already backed by an online following of over 55,000 subscribers and 5.5 million views at YouTube, Oxford’s twenty-year-old musician Lewis Watson is an integral part of a growing movement of talented young singer-songwriters such as Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Ben Howard and Jake Bugg.

After his debut EP ‘It’s Got Four Sad Songs On It BTW’ topped the iTunes singer-songwriter chart on the first day of release, outselling the likes of Adele, Madonna and Ed Sheeran, Lewis’s second ‘Another Four Sad Songs’ EP continued his rise to prominence as publications including The Independent, The Sun, the Daily Mail and the Daily Star all listed him as one of their top tips for 2013. His growing stardom has also seen him play gigs and achieve impressive chart positions in the States and Australia.

Now, Lewis Watson will release his third EP ‘The Wild’ on March 26th on Warner Bros. Records. Its lead track ‘Into The Wild’ shows how his sound has matured from stripped-down singer-songwriter material to a full band production which neatly contrasts delicate verses with an expansive hook. Lewis Watson adds Birmingham date to March tour

January 20, 2013 in News

Following his sold out show at The Rainbow last year, we are very excited to announce that Lewis Watson will return to Birmingham in March! This comes after a fan vote to determine which extra city Lewis should add to his upcoming tour, with Birmingham firmly coming out on top!

Today’s generation of aspiring young musicians often have just one choice in their pursuit of a career – to take the plunge and independently mastermind a digital cottage industry from which their songs can be discovered by a like-minded audience. That’s precisely what Oxford’s twenty-year-old singer-songwriter Lewis Watson did. After gradually building his own fan-base, his economically-produced debut EP ‘It’s Got Four Sad Songs On It BTW’ topped the iTunes singer-songwriter chart on the first day of release, outselling the likes of Adele, Madonna and Ed Sheeran in the process. It’s a model that plenty of artists aspire to recreate, but few ever make any serious progress with.

Within days of the EP’s release, Watson had attracted the attention of just about every record label in the land and soon inked a deal with Warner Bros. Records. Part of the appeal, he says, was the label’s long-running success with male solo artists as diverse as David Gray, Damien Rice and Neil Young. Recent months have found Watson holed up with a huge number of collaborating songwriters and producers including Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys), Richard Wilkinson (Kaiser Chiefs), Iain Archer (Jake Bugg), Kid Harpoon (Florence + The Machine) and Mr Hudson.
