This Week: Gig Roundup 15th – 21st June

This Wednesday we welcome much-hyped Scottish hip-hop outfit Stanley Odd to Birmingham’s The Sunflower Lounge. Following that, Thursday sees North-London pop-rockers Room 94 take to the stage at The Rainbow after tour dates with the likes of Union J and Lawson. Friday we bring you the second installment of Baddie’s Banquet, a night that brings you 3 rooms of live music and DJs until late. This Friday’s event is headed up by rising Telford noisemakers Hyena, with support from Manchester duo Bad Grammar and local four-piece The Drive. Saturday sees 20 year-old Brighton based singer-songwriter Jack Watts headline the free entry Acoustic Sessions at The Glee Club, followed by a visit from Melbourne garage rock quintet Money For Rope over at The Sunflower Lounge. Check out the full listings below:

WEDNESDAY 17TH JUNE

Edinburgh-based alternative hip-hop band Stanley Odd return with their third studio album A Thing Brand New. The record follows up from the band’s second album Reject, which was shortlisted for a 2012 Scottish Album of the Year. Since then, Stanley Odd have continued to tour heavily, taking in some their biggest shows to date including a string of US dates with The View and numerous festival slots including Wickerman, Belladrum, Insider, Greenbelt and Celtic Connections. Support at this show comes from Telford-based acoustic hip-hop duo Loose Lips and acoustic hip-hop and soul influenced Bear.

THURSDAY 18TH JUNE

North London pop-rockers Room 94 have built up a loyal following over the last couple of years through shows withUnion J, Lawson and Twenty Twenty. Their debut albumNo Strings Attached reached the Top 30 in March 2014 – a mightily impressive feat for a then unsigned band. Less than a year later, they’re back with a second self-titled album. What follows is even more impressive, with anthemic, hook-heavy rock that recalls the band’s love of You Me At Six, The Offspring and Bring Me The Horizon. Support comes from Shropshire based rock four-piece Young Braves.

Baddie’s Banquet is a new Friday night event at The Rainbow. One set entry price allows access to three rooms of music, including a host of the best local live bands in The Rainbow Courtyard & Cellar. Aftershow follows in the bar with Testify DJ’s spinning 60s R&B, Northern Soul and Disco till late. Headlining this week are rising Telford noisemakers Hyena, Manchester noise-rock duo Bad Grammar and local indie rockers The Drive.

After recently releasing his debut EP, Red Shortbread, Jack joins us at the Glee Club Birmingham to headline our weekly free entry Acoustic Sessions! A song-cycle of sorts tracing the transition from a failed relationship into stability & contentment elsewhere, Red Shortbread is the work of a magnetic new talent, as distinctive and assured as the emotional territory it inhabits is fragile. Support comes from acoustic duo Contact, folk duo Franklin & Jones and folk singer-songwriter The Gardener’s Son.

Melbourne-based quintet Money For Rope’s raw brand of rock music has earned them a reputation for chaotic, ambling musical mayhem tied together by harmonies driven by the spirit of rock. Twin drum kits, two guitars, four voices, a bass, keys and a sweltering, sultry, swaggering style, Money For Rope are dealers in a raw brand of rock music that must be felt to be believed. With their public-bar rise propelled by word-of-mouth whisperings, 7” releases and an energetic, swirling live show that seethes with energy, Money For Rope released their much-anticipated self-titled full-length recording in November 2012, taking their pulsing sound from dark stages to stereos right across the globe. Support comes from Birmingham trio Millbrook.

Christmas is a time for giving and we’ve certainly not failed in lining up some fantastic musical treats for you this week! We’ve got a sold out farewell gig from Suffolk rockers Canterbury, a headline show from local noisemakers Hyena and a musical showcase from the superbly talented Mahalia! WEDNESDAY 17th DECEMBER 

Canterbury + The Young @ The Flapper *SOLD OUT*

After 7 successful years, Suffolk rock quartet Canterbury have decided to call it a day, embarking on a farewell UK tour which calls at The Flapper this Wednesday. Fantastic album reviews from the likes of Kerrang (KKKK) and Rocksound (9/10)  helped build the band’s popularity through 2012/13, plus their own sold out UK tours and support slots with You Me At SixThe Blackout and Deaf Havana. This very special night will be a celebration of the band’s achievements to date and should not be missed! Support comes from local four-piece The Young.

FRIDAY 19th DECEMBER 

Hyena + The Mighty Young + Electric @ The Sunflower Lounge

Telford based Hyena, formerly known as Weatherbird, released their impressive debut single ‘Mental Home’ under their new guise in November. The single, issued by Red Venom was produced by Royal Blood producer Tom Dalgety who focused on the band’s Nirvana-esque surging dynamic and hoarse power to mesmeric effect. The band, who have recently toured with Aussie thrashpop group DZ Deathrays, have been compared to the likes of Darlia and Drenge and are sure to follow in their footsteps. Support comes from garage rock duo The Mighty Young  and local racketmakers Electric. More info available here.

3 Daft Monkeys @ The Oobleck

Following their rip-roaring set at the Hare & Hounds last year, the Cornish gypsy-folk band return to Birmingham to play The Oobleck. 2013 saw the release of their sixth studio album Of Stones and Bones, their most story-led and theatrical to date, sheer joy of life mixed with their infectious dancing rhythms will leave you breathless, enthralled and exhilarated. Mahalia + Joel Baker + Interior Castle @ The Sunflower Lounge

Mahalia and Birmingham Promoters team up to bring you the first in a very special series of events we’re calling ‘Mahalia Presents’ in which the Leicester songstress invites her dearest and favourite artists to the stage for a most excellent night of music! After two years spent supporting the likes of Ed SheeranEmeli SandeNick MulveyLaura Mvula and Kate Tempest,  Mahalia has grown into an exciting, soulful and vibrant performer. For this night, she brings with her Nottingham born songsmith Joel Baker and Australian/English female duo Interior Castle. Tickets available here.
