Spectres to play Hare & Hounds Birmingham

April 13, 2017 in News

Noise rock quartet Spectres were formed in Barnstaple, North Devon in 2011.  After moving to Bristol a couple years later they self-released a few EPs and singles on their own Howling Owl label, before joining forces with Sonic Cathedral for 2015’s Dying, their incendiary debut that they promised would “snap people out of their comfort zones. We want our noise to smack the spoon out of their mouths that is feeding them the warm diarrhoea that is served by start-up PR companies”.

The resulting largely positive coverage everywhere from NME to Drowned In SoundThe Times and the Guardian to BBC Radio 1, comparisons to Sonic Youth and Loop – not to mention people fleeing their gigs, hands pressed tightly over bleeding ears – would suggest they went some way to achieving this aim.

Spectres latest album Condition was released 10th March 2017 via Sonic Cathedral.

Boxed In is songwriter and producer Oli Bayston. Having played in indie band Keith, written for The 2 Bears, sung for George FitzGerald and been a producer for the likes of Charlie Boyer and the VoyeursRosie Lowe and The Bohicas, Oli is now bringing his wide array of talents to bear on his own solo project. Boxed In brings together Oli’s two greatest musical loves: Krautrock and house music. Inspired by the motorik rhythms of CanCluster and Neu! as well as house producers, like Pépé Bradock and Theo Parrish, Oli nevertheless emphasises that the art of pop song writing is right at the heart of Boxed In. Support comes from London-based electronic-rock band Zola Blood and Birmingham’s Midnight Bonfires,a band who fuse folk sensitivity with rock and roll energy.

But on their latest album, Christmas Island, the Phoenix folk-punk weirdos seem intent on upping their eccentric lyric game. Support on this show comes from Californian punk trio Hard Girls and energetic Birmingham quartet Ghosts of Dead Airplanes.
