This Week: Gig Roundup 22nd – 28th June

This week gets off to a start on Thursday with House of Sound, a new music night at The Rainbow that collects the very best of the UK’s emerging talent alongside open mic slots and chilled vibes. This week’s events is headed up by The Piratones and Kizzy Crawford. On Friday Sheffield indie quartet The Sherlocks take to the stage at The Rainbow fresh from Isle of Wight Festival and support slots with The Buzzcocks, Reverend & The Makers and The Enemy. Friday also sees maximalist cosmic voyagers Free School play a show at the Hare & Hounds to celebrate the launch of their new single ‘Love Calling’. Saturday we welcome Boat To Row frontman Michael King to The Glee Club as he headlines the Acoustic Sessions for what promises to be a beautiful set. Following that over at The Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham-born singer-songwriter Benjamin Yellowitz returns to his hometown to celebrate the release of his brand new EP. Bringing it all to a close on Sunday we can’t wait to welcome Alden Penner, co-founder of celebrated Canadian art-pop band The Unicorns and his close friend Michael Cera to The Rainbow. Take a look at the full listings below for more info:

Maximalist cosmic voyagers Free School have won the support of Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe, Gilles Peterson & Jacques Renault. The duo’s live show features a live drummer, a string of guest vocalists and has seen them support Editors, Andrew Weatherall, Walls, Ulrich Schnauss and Fujiya & Miyagi. Free School have set sail for bolder territories on their new LP. Together with a fearless band of shamanistic vocalists (Maps, Greg Bird, Tomlin Mystic, Sigmund Frued) they have created their most unique and profound set of hypnotic broadcasts to date. New single ‘Love Calling’ was recently premiered on BBC 6 Music. Set your controls for the heart of the sun.

SATURDAY 27TH JUNE

Acoustic Sessions: Michael King + Greg Larkin + Simon Joseph Gregory @ The Glee Club Lounge

The lead singer and songwriter in much loved Birmingham folk quintet Boat To Row takes to the stage at The Glee Club as part of the weekly free entry Acoustic Sessions. Support comes from Manchester based acoustic instrumental guitarist Greg Larkin and Simon Joseph Gregory, guitarist in Birmingham indie-folk band Midnight Bonfires.

Benjamin Yellowitz + Indica Campbell + Atlas @ The Sunflower Lounge

Birmingham-born singer-songwriter, backed by the likes of Ben Howard, Fink and Coldplay, returns to his hometown to celebrate the release of his brand new EP. The self-produced musician, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist takes acoustic roots to new levels with his dark ambient production style. Support comes from 21 and a singer/songwriter Indica Campbell,  daughter of UB40′s Ali Campbell and granddaughter of folk singer Ian Campbell, plus opening support from Emma-Lee Shepherd aka ATLAS, an experimental indie/pop singer-songwriter from Birmingham.

In 2003 Alden Penner cemented himself in the annals of indie rock history as the co-founder/singer of The Unicorns, Montreal’s beloved dysfunctional art-pop outfit. Following a series of low-key self releases Alden Penner is back with a new EP Canada In Space. Featuring his friends Michael Cera, Laura Crapo and Farley Miller Penner will be playing songs from his new EP along with songs from throughout his career. Support comes from The Adam Brown.

MONDAY 19TH MAY

Drowners + Cold Ocean Lies @ The Sunflower Lounge

Fresh from supporting fellow New Yorker’s SKATERS, we have Drowners returning to Birmingham for their own headline show at The Sunflower Lounge. They will be showcasing their garage pop tracks from latest eponymous album including ‘Luv, Hold Me Down’ and ‘A Button on Your Blouse’. WEDNESDAY 21ST MAY

Young Rebel Set + Empire Divide + Broken Witt Rebels @ The Sunflower Lounge

Experience a night of rebellion with our second offering this week – five piece Young Rebel Set. With upcoming performances at Tomorrow Festival, Weekender, Southside Festival, Hurricane Festival and Stockton Calling, as well as their UK tour, these folk infused indie boys have a busy few months ahead of them and we are delighted they will be stopping at The Sunflower Lounge in the midst of it all. THURSDAY 22ND MAY 

Tiny Ruins @ The Glee Club

To celebrate their first signing with Bella Union, Tiny Ruins will be promoting their second album ‘Brightly Painted One’ on tour and will be stopping by The Glee Club on Thursday evening.  Based in New Zealand and previously a solo act, Tiny Ruins have supported artists such as Beach HouseJoanna NewsomFleet FoxesFather John MistyThe Handsome Family and Calexico we cannot wait to see what they bring in Brum. The Struts + Friday Club + The Concept @ Hare & Hounds, King’s Heath

If indie rock reminiscent of a combination of The Libertines and Queen is more your thing, stop by Hare & Hounds and catch The Struts on Thursday night. FRIDAY 23RD MAY

The Hoosiers + Ariana & The Rose + Capital Sun @ The Institute

The Hoosiers have made a come back with new album ‘The News From Nowhere’ and UK tour, including a show at The Institute. The self-produced and self-released album is said to be a true return to form. With support from the beautiful New York based Ariana & The Rose and local band Capital Sun, tickets available here.

You can also catch Thumpers at Hare & Hounds performing on Friday night at Hare & Hounds. Ex-members of Pull Tiger Tail who have reformed into an unstoppable duo who were recently signed to mighty American Sup Pop Records. Youth Man + Elephantine + Adore @ The Sunflower Lounge

With festival slots lined up at The Great EscapeLiverpool Sound City, 2000 Trees & Y Not Festival, trio Youth Man will be playing a warm up headline show at The Sunflower Lounge on Saturday night. By the end of their brakeless juggernaut of a show – once the ringing in your ears has subsided – you’ll have plenty to talk about. Swim Deep + The Magic Gang + Juice @ The Oobelck

If you’re a B-Twon fan there’s nowhere else to be this Bank Holiday Saturday other than brand new venue The Oobleck at Alfie Birds in The Custrad Factory where Swim Deep will be playing. Taking a break from writing their much-anticipated second album, the Birmingham four-piece will join us for the launch weekend of of the venue. Joe Miles + Holly Aires + Connor Hemming + Wes Dance @ The Yardbird
