This Week: Gig Roundup 19th – 25th May

Here we round up the next seven days worth of gigs we have to offer. With popular indie pop bands to punk-noise trios to B-town legends, spend this week seeing the diverse acts Birmingham has to offer at all the best venues in town.

MONDAY 19TH MAY

Drowners + Cold Ocean Lies @ The Sunflower Lounge

Fresh from supporting fellow New Yorker’s SKATERS, we have Drowners returning to Birmingham for their own headline show at The Sunflower Lounge. They will be showcasing their garage pop tracks from latest eponymous album including ‘Luv, Hold Me Down’ and ‘A Button on Your Blouse’. WEDNESDAY 21ST MAY

Young Rebel Set + Empire Divide + Broken Witt Rebels @ The Sunflower Lounge

Experience a night of rebellion with our second offering this week – five piece Young Rebel Set. With upcoming performances at Tomorrow Festival, Weekender, Southside Festival, Hurricane Festival and Stockton Calling, as well as their UK tour, these folk infused indie boys have a busy few months ahead of them and we are delighted they will be stopping at The Sunflower Lounge in the midst of it all. THURSDAY 22ND MAY 

Tiny Ruins @ The Glee Club

To celebrate their first signing with Bella Union, Tiny Ruins will be promoting their second album ‘Brightly Painted One’ on tour and will be stopping by The Glee Club on Thursday evening.  Based in New Zealand and previously a solo act, Tiny Ruins have supported artists such as Beach HouseJoanna NewsomFleet FoxesFather John MistyThe Handsome Family and Calexico we cannot wait to see what they bring in Brum. The Struts + Friday Club + The Concept @ Hare & Hounds, King’s Heath

If indie rock reminiscent of a combination of The Libertines and Queen is more your thing, stop by Hare & Hounds and catch The Struts on Thursday night. Having recently gained recognition with their instantly addictive track ‘I Just Know’ which featured on a TV Denim campaign, the band will be sure to play tracks from the debut album which is set for release this Summer. FRIDAY 23RD MAY

The Hoosiers + Ariana & The Rose + Capital Sun @ The Institute

The Hoosiers have made a come back with new album ‘The News From Nowhere’ and UK tour, including a show at The Institute. The self-produced and self-released album is said to be a true return to form. With support from the beautiful New York based Ariana & The Rose and local band Capital Sun, tickets available here.

Thumpers + Cut Ribbons + Field Harmonics + Arc Vel @ Hare & Hounds, King’s Heath

You can also catch Thumpers at Hare & Hounds performing on Friday night at Hare & Hounds. Ex-members of Pull Tiger Tail who have reformed into an unstoppable duo who were recently signed to mighty American Sup Pop Records. Having been tipped hotly by the likes of VEVOTransmitterThe Line of Best Fit,Independent on SundayFake DIY and Amazing Radio, Thumpers will showcase debut album ‘Galore’. SATURDAY 24TH MAY

Youth Man + Elephantine + Adore @ The Sunflower Lounge

With festival slots lined up at The Great EscapeLiverpool Sound City, 2000 Trees & Y Not Festival, trio Youth Man will be playing a warm up headline show at The Sunflower Lounge on Saturday night. By the end of their brakeless juggernaut of a show – once the ringing in your ears has subsided – you’ll have plenty to talk about. With popular local support from Elephantine and Adore you don’t wanna miss this show, tickets available here.

Swim Deep + The Magic Gang + Juice @ The Oobelck

If you’re a B-Twon fan there’s nowhere else to be this Bank Holiday Saturday other than brand new venue The Oobleck at Alfie Birds in The Custrad Factory where Swim Deep will be playing. Taking a break from writing their much-anticipated second album, the Birmingham four-piece will join us for the launch weekend of of the venue. SUNDAY 25TH MAY

Joe Miles + Holly Aires + Connor Hemming + Wes Dance @ The Yardbird

If you’re city centre bound this Bank Holiday Sunday why not round off your week at the Sunday Social at The Yardbird, where singer/songwriter Joe Miles, acoustic act Holly Aires, folk rock act Connor Hemming and the mesmerising Wes Dance are playing. Entry to this event is free, find out all you know here.

Young Rebel Set to play The Sunflower Lounge Bham

Teesside five-piece Young Rebel Set’s new album Crocodile is out now in the UK on Ignition Records, and to celebrate the quintet are embarking on their biggest UK tour to date his spring, calling at Birmingham’s very own The Sunflower Lounge on Wednesday 21st May 2014.

The follow up to their 2011 debut album Curse Our Love, Crocodile was recorded in Glasgow at Chem19 Studios with producer (and former Delgado’s drummer) Paul Savage, best known for his work with Mogwai, The Phantom Band & Arab Strap.

Young Rebel Set spent much autumn 2013 promoting Crocodile in Germany, where they are signed to hip indie Grand Hotel Van Cleef. The band have enjoyed considerable success in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where they have toured consistently and regularly headline venues of over 1000 capacity, including Grosse Freiheit in Hamburg and Postbahnoff in Berlin.

TUESDAY 13TH MAY

We Were Evergeen @ Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath

On Tuesday, London synth-pop trio We Were Evergreen stop by Hare & Hounds as part of their latest UK headline tour. Having previous support slots with the likes of London Grammar and Little Dragon, We Were Evergreen produce an exciting amalgamation of beats and rhythms from across the world, warm vocals and electronic-pop melodies. WEDNESDAY 14TH MAY

Teleman + Gentlemen + Babe @ Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath

Hare & Hounds will play host to one of BBC 6 Music favourite four-pieces, Teleman. Having the unique comparison of Pet Shop Boys meets The Velvet Underground, the boys’ debut album Breakfast is set for release on June 2nd, which will feature popular tracks ‘Cristina’, ’23 Floors Up’ and new release ‘Lady Low’. They will be supported by fellow Moshi Moshi pals Gentleman and Babe, grab your tickets here.

FRIDAY 16TH MAY

Augustines + Empire Divide @ The Institute

We have a busy Friday this week, the first to kick things off being the mighty Augustines who are playing at The Institute as part of their ‘Walkabout Tour’. They will be sure to play a host of tracks from new self-titled album recorded with co-producer Peter Katis (The National, Frightened RabbitInterpol) at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut, as well as hits from their much loved Rise Ye Sunken Ships LP.  With support from London based Empire Divide, pick up your tickets for mere £10 here.

Lotte Mullan + Robert Lane @ The Glee Club

Our second offering takes the shape of the lovely Lotte Mullan performing at The Glee Club. Following support slots with the likes of Scott MatthewsNewton Faulker and Albert Hammond, plus a triumphant headline tour last year, Lotte will be showcasing her new album produced in Nashville with Band of Horses. With comparisons to Laura Marling and music featured in a Ridley Scott Productions short film, stop by The Glee Club for a night of indie infused folk pop. Beaty Heart + Deaf Inspector + Mutes @ Hare & Hounds

Last but not least on Friday will be Peckham trio Beaty Heart who are performing at Hare & Hounds. Having been championed by Radio 1’s Huw StephensPhil Taggart & Alice LavineRob Da Bank,  6Music’s Radcliff & MaconieXFM and Amazing Radio and fresh from their support slot with Jungle, we are delighted to welcome the three-piece to Birmingham. SATURDAY 17TH MAY

Black Market Empire + New Bays @ Alfie Birds, Custard Factory

A bittersweet night as we see Black Market Empire perform their last ever gig for our first ever show at brand new venue Alfie Birds at The Custard Factory. Having been compared to everyone from The Kinks and The BeatlesThe Buzzcocks and The Clash,The StrokesThe LibertinesPulp and Suede and having played with the likes of The Temper TrapBombay Bicycle ClubViva BrotherThe BluetonesNine Black Alps, Black Market Empire have sadly decided to call it a day. SUNDAY 18TH MAY

Courtney Barnett + Honeyblood @ Hare & Hounds

Melbourne based Courtney Barnett will be playing for us at Hare & Hounds to top off our week. Described as a remarkable hybrid of Kimya Dawson and Kurt Cobain, Courtney played knockout performance at Coachella and has recently announced a forthcoming slot at Glastonbury. Courtney will be supported by Glaswegian two piece Honeyblood, final few tickets available here.

French For Rabbits + Chris Bicknell @ The Yardbird

Alternatively, if you’re city centre bound, why not round off your week at the Sunday Social at The Yardbird where haunting dream folk duo French For Rabbits and singer/songwriter Chris Bicknell are playing. Entry to this event is free, find out all you know here.
