Ryley Walker to play The Empire

March 30, 2017 in News

American singer-songwriter and guitarist Ryley Walker from Rockford, Illinois released his fourth album Golden Sings That Have Been Sung on Dead Oceans last year. Sunny and shimmering, this record’s not unlike its cover, nor is it unlike a warm Chicago evening. Produced by Wilco multi-instrumentalist (and fellow Chicagoan) LeRoy BachGolden Sings That Have Been Sung is very much born of the windy city. ‘The Roundabout’ calls out Ryley’s favourite local watering hole, a handful of Chicago players appear on the record.

While tethered to this place he calls home, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung carves out its own microcosm. As The New York Times aptly put it, “his songs are rooms to poke around in, rustling the curtains.”

After extensive touring, in March 2016 Walker’s second album Primrose Green emerged to critical hosannas from the likes of NPRVillage VoiceUncut, and Mojo – in the process, earning admiration of musicians who had chalked up no shortage of turntable miles in Walker’s life. Robert Plant declared himself a fan – as did double-bass legend Danny Thompson, with whom Ryley would later embark on a British tour. For all of that, a holiday was the last thing on Ryley’s mind – and certainly not a holiday in his adopted hometown. After a year spent on the road, all that Ryley could associate with Chicago was the emotional debris he had left behind.

White Lies to play The Empire Coventry

March 6, 2017 in News

A dark-edged trio hailing from London, White Lies take sonic cues from the likes of Joy DivisionThe Teardrop Explodes, and Echo & the Bunnymen. Indeed, the three musicians are so committed to the U.K.’s post-punk scene that they signed with Fiction Records, a Polydor imprint best known for its ’80s releases by The Cure and The Associates.

After changing their name from Fear of Flying in 2006, the trio changed musical directions, adapted a more somber group persona, and began creating doomy material like the funereal murder ballad ‘Unfinished Business’ and the self-explanatory ‘Death’.

The latest album Friends was released after a three-year wait, continuing with their crisp, vibrant synth pop and gnarly post-punk sound The band self-produced the album, which was recorded at Bryan Ferry‘s private studio in Kensington, West London. White Lies enlisted the help of an expert team including Grammy Award-winning engineer James Brown (Foo FightersArctic Monkeys), David Wrench (CaribouFKA Twigs) on mixing duties and long-term collaborator Ed Buller who contributed additional production.
