This Week: Gig Roundup 22nd – 28th June

This week gets off to a start on Thursday with House of Sound, a new music night at The Rainbow that collects the very best of the UK’s emerging talent alongside open mic slots and chilled vibes. This week’s events is headed up by The Piratones and Kizzy Crawford. On Friday Sheffield indie quartet The Sherlocks take to the stage at The Rainbow fresh from Isle of Wight Festival and support slots with The Buzzcocks, Reverend & The Makers and The Enemy. Friday also sees maximalist cosmic voyagers Free School play a show at the Hare & Hounds to celebrate the launch of their new single ‘Love Calling’. Saturday we welcome Boat To Row frontman Michael King to The Glee Club as he headlines the Acoustic Sessions for what promises to be a beautiful set. Following that over at The Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham-born singer-songwriter Benjamin Yellowitz returns to his hometown to celebrate the release of his brand new EP. Bringing it all to a close on Sunday we can’t wait to welcome Alden Penner, co-founder of celebrated Canadian art-pop band The Unicorns and his close friend Michael Cera to The Rainbow. Take a look at the full listings below for more info:

Maximalist cosmic voyagers Free School have won the support of Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe, Gilles Peterson & Jacques Renault. The duo’s live show features a live drummer, a string of guest vocalists and has seen them support Editors, Andrew Weatherall, Walls, Ulrich Schnauss and Fujiya & Miyagi. Free School have set sail for bolder territories on their new LP. Together with a fearless band of shamanistic vocalists (Maps, Greg Bird, Tomlin Mystic, Sigmund Frued) they have created their most unique and profound set of hypnotic broadcasts to date. New single ‘Love Calling’ was recently premiered on BBC 6 Music. Set your controls for the heart of the sun.

SATURDAY 27TH JUNE

Acoustic Sessions: Michael King + Greg Larkin + Simon Joseph Gregory @ The Glee Club Lounge

The lead singer and songwriter in much loved Birmingham folk quintet Boat To Row takes to the stage at The Glee Club as part of the weekly free entry Acoustic Sessions. Support comes from Manchester based acoustic instrumental guitarist Greg Larkin and Simon Joseph Gregory, guitarist in Birmingham indie-folk band Midnight Bonfires.

Benjamin Yellowitz + Indica Campbell + Atlas @ The Sunflower Lounge

Birmingham-born singer-songwriter, backed by the likes of Ben Howard, Fink and Coldplay, returns to his hometown to celebrate the release of his brand new EP. The self-produced musician, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist takes acoustic roots to new levels with his dark ambient production style. Support comes from 21 and a singer/songwriter Indica Campbell,  daughter of UB40′s Ali Campbell and granddaughter of folk singer Ian Campbell, plus opening support from Emma-Lee Shepherd aka ATLAS, an experimental indie/pop singer-songwriter from Birmingham.

In 2003 Alden Penner cemented himself in the annals of indie rock history as the co-founder/singer of The Unicorns, Montreal’s beloved dysfunctional art-pop outfit. Following a series of low-key self releases Alden Penner is back with a new EP Canada In Space. Featuring his friends Michael Cera, Laura Crapo and Farley Miller Penner will be playing songs from his new EP along with songs from throughout his career. Support comes from The Adam Brown.

MONDAY 26TH MAY 

The Pizza Underground + The Pizza Underground’s Exploding Pizza Inevitable @ Hare & Hounds

Fan of The Velvet Underground? And pizza? How about the two combined at the Hare & Hounds?! Yep on Monday evening we have tribute band with a twist The Pizza Underground performing. Band-members Matt Colbourn, Deenah Vollmer, Austin Kilham, Phoebe Kreutz and Macaulay Culkin will burn your mouth with low-fi hits like “All the “All the Pizza Parties” (All Tomorrow’s Parties), “Pizza, It Hurts” (Venus in Furs), and “Take a Bite of the Wild Slice” (Walk on the Wild Side”). Tickets for this gig are completely sold out! If you managed to get yourself a ticket, see you there for some unique pizza filled entertainment.

Victories At Sea + Death Rattle @ The Old Blue Last, London

If you’re headed for the Big Smoke Wednesday night, catch Victories At Sea playing The Old Blue Last in Shoreditch. Fresh from the release of their new EP ‘In Memory Of’ and supporting Editors on their European tour, catch this experimental trio influenced by the likes of Echo and The Bunnymen and New Order if you can. Only Real + Atlas + Lime @ The Sunflower Lounge

If sun-kissed and carefree rap infused fuzz-pop is more your thing, catch Niall Galvin a.k.a Only Real at The Sunflower Lounge this Wednesday. Following a headline slot the Lexington for the 2014 NME Awards he will be embarking on his first headline tour of the UK in March in anticipation of his new album due out later this year. Vix & Her Mschiefs + Special Guests @ The Sunflower Lounge

ViX, having previously toured the UK and Emirates supporting the likes of Paul Weller, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, The Wailers, The Christians, Arrested Development etc, she introduces her brand new all-female line-up band  Vix & Her Mschiefsfeaturing ukulele, violin, guitar and cajon playing Alt-Country tracks. FRIDAY 30TH MAY

Keziasoul + Burnside @ Hare & Hounds 

Birmingham based Keziasoul, influenced by  reggae, soul, folk, rock and R & B and artists such as Jill Scott, Mary Wells, Billie Holiday and Dionne Warwick, will be performing at Hare & Hounds on Friday night. This young neo-soul, jazz funk styled all rounded vocalist will be supported by Brummie six piece Burnside. Don’t miss out and grab your tickets here.

Wall Of Sound 20th Anniersary ft Ekkoes + Kids On Bridges @ The Sunflower Lounge

Iconic British Independent Record Label ‘Wall of Sound’announce their 20th Anniversary with a series of ‘Off the Wall’ projects to celebrate their musical heritage. The label continues to march forward with a plethora of fresh and exciting artists including new forthcoming releases from recent signings synth pop Ekkoes and funk rock Kids on Bridges. SUNDAY 1ST JUNE

Smoke Fairies + The Lake Poets @ Hare & Hounds

Smoke Fairies will be showcasing their outstanding epynomous new album at Hare & Hounds on Sunday night. Having toured with Bryan FerryRichard Hawley and Laura Marling, and had a single released on Jack White’s Third Man Records, the duo are back. Come see how they have experimented with piano and synth in their new album and with support from The Lake Poets be sure to get a ticket here.
