MassMatiks to play The Flapper Birmingham

July 25, 2017 in News

This is a true band of the people, highlighting social injustice and oozing with raw honesty. Having a clear goal in their lyrics, MassMatiks‘ universal appeal lends itself to not just one band of fans, making them accessible to all. The heart of this quartet is undeniably the song writing, with lead singer George Peploe finding inspiration in the everyday trials of life, from false hard-nuts to ex-lovers. The brutality of life and the energetic nature of the songs equates to a band full of potential and brimming with ideas.

MassMatiks played over 60 shows in 2016, which included a 20-date sold out UK tour supporting Don Broco. In addition to this, the band sold over 800 tickets to their own headline tour, and successfully sold out a further two headline shows at The Garage and Camden Assembly (both London) – to round off what was a great year for the upcoming London predators. Their incendiary live shows have grown in numbers and drawn fans from across Europe to travel to their gigs. Following on from their latest single ‘Blank Wall,’ MassMatiks are set to break down barriers of what it takes to be a rock band in 2017.

“The energy and aggression they bring to their live show is second to none” – Rob Damiani, Don Broco

“They have a swagger and a substance that is missing from alot of new bands” – Louder Than War

Tom Walker announces Birmingham show

July 25, 2017 in News

Currently taking 2017 by storm, British newcomer Tom Walker builds on the release of his debut EP on Relentless Records with the release of huge new track ‘Heartland’ co-written and produced by Naughty Boy.

The release of ‘Heartland’ follows critical acclaim from tastemakers The Sunday TimesPigeons&PlanesWonderlandShortlist and MTV, for his debut Blessings EP which was co-produced with Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys) and featured ‘Just You & I’ a track which has already had an astonishing 17M streams. Tom also marked his breakout year with his first major US TV performance on the Today Show – also playing three sold out shows in LA and New York before returning to London for a sold show at Omeara.

Now the Glasgow born, Manchester-bred artist follows tracks with Kojey Radical and Avelino with this Naughty Boy collaboration; delicate violin plucks create a deceptively classy backdrop to Tom’s rousing, gravel-flecked vocals and frank, vivid and relatable lyrics.

‘Heartland” says Tom, “is about temptation getting the better of you. It’s about life’s hangover, where you wake up the next morning and realise things haven’t turned out as expected and the price you pay. Happens to the best of us.”

Rosie Carney & Henry Jamison to play Birmingham show

July 24, 2017 in News

Rosie Carney and Henry Jamison embark on a joint headline tour.

20 year old Donegal based singer-songwriter Rosie Carney was born in Hampshire, UK in 1997 before moving to Ireland when she was 10 in 2007. Instantly inspired by the vast, rugged, picturesque landscapes of her hometown, Downings, Rosie started to play music. Rosie signed a major recording contract with Universals Polydor when she was just 16 where she made contact and co-wrote with people such as Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs), Angelo Petragalia (Kings Of Leon), Charlie Fink (Noah and The Whale), Turin Brakes, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, to name but a few. In January 2015, due to unforeseen circumstances, Rosie was released (freed) from her contract with Polydor. Although seen as the recipe for disaster, Rosie didn’t stop making and playing music. Things soon took a turn when, in early December, Rosie was invited to Austin, TX by SXSW to showcase her music. After making it onto NPR’s top 100 song list, she made contact with Stevie McMin, founder and head man of independent and home to Phoria label, X Novo Records.

With his stunning debut album The Wilds Henry Jamison is ready to claim his place as the latest in a long line of remarkable storytellers. Blending delicate acoustic guitar and banjo with programmed percussion loops and synthesizers, the Vermont songwriter grapples with the jarring dissonances of contemporary life in his music as he struggles to reconcile the clashes between our inner and outer selves, the natural world and our fabricated society. Jamison is a solitary artist, writing, recording, and arranging everything himself on the album including the string arrangements, and he pens his lyrics with cinematic precision, conjuring vivid scenes and fully realized characters wrestling with existential crises and modern malaise. His dazzling way with words and keen ear for memorable hooks at once calls to mind the baroque pop of Sufjan Stevens and the unflinching emotional honesty of Frightened Rabbit, but the delivery is uniquely his own, understated yet devastating.

John Joseph Brill to play The Sunflower Lounge

July 24, 2017 in News

Having spent his early 20’s fronting London based heavy rock outfit Burning BeardJohn Joseph Brill established himself as a mainstay of the West London music scene.

The same musical community that bred The StavesLaura Marling and Bear’s Den heavily influenced Brill to explore a more confessional, honest form of songwriting and in 2013 he left his former band and the capital and moved to Liverpool. There he honed his craft as a solo artist, immersed in the oeuvre of Leonard CohenJason Molina and Neil Young he began writing and performing, in his unique baritone style, songs about everything from heartbreak to death and friendship.

River Matthews announces Birmingham show

July 24, 2017 in News

Despite his youthful years, the music of River Matthews flows from a uniquely timeless place. His distinctive voice, reminiscent of artists like Jeff Buckley and Sixto ‘Sugarman’ Rodriguez, creaks and rasps with wisdom and experience. His patient, personal blend of soul and folk effortlessly transcends eras and genres.

River met a fellow musician, songwriter and kindred spirit, Mike Needle, who introduced him to Jamie Scott, the singer, songwriter and producer who has worked with everyone from Michael Kiwanuka to One DirectionRon Sexsmith to Jessie Ware.

Jamie has now produced the debut EP Feels Like Morningand has been involved creatively along the way.

The EP in question features ‘Catherine’ and ‘Over’ – two beautiful ballads capable of bringing giants to their knees – as well as the poetic ‘Stars’, which was inspired by observing a clear night sky during an overnight stay outside of Inverness, and was written about his family. The title track, the soaring, upbeat ‘Feels Like Morning’ also started out as a slow song but took on a life and tempo of its own when he realized it was all about new beginnings; a perfect soundtrack for kickstarting a new career, you might say.

Son of Dave announces Birmingham show

July 19, 2017 in News

Son of Dave, the one and only harmonica and beatbox blues maverick is back for another season. Music For Cop Showsis classic S.o.D, loaded with instrumental hooks, original blues flavoured songs, irresistible grooves and sly madness. His music has appeared in Breaking BadBloodlinePreacher and other television crime dramas, which seems to have encouraged him to put the cart before the horse and create a loose cannon of ditties harking back to 1970′s cop shows. Or not. It’s typical Son of Dave messing with you, using ingredients only he can cook with. Fans know it well. It’s his eighth album, and he’s not made a weak one yet.

The artist himself on Music For Cop Shows: “I got the call from Mr. Big of Big Records, you know? They got another tune into yet another crime drama. They keep asking for more though. So I made this record for ‘em. ‘Stick that in your soundtrack’ I said.”

Son of Dave is fifty years old, and has lived for twenty-one years in the UK, hailing originally from Winnipeg Canada where he was steeped at a young age in the blues-bar tradition. His resumé is long, having had many other successes along the way. He plans to perform until his 80′s at least, pointing out that there is no pension plan for Bluesmen, and the whole live-fast-die-young game is for kids who can’t handle their booze, or their managers simply after publicity.

LISTEN: Together Pangea – ‘Money On It’

July 17, 2017 in News

Sometimes waiting for things to change is nothing more than beating your head against a wall. You sit there hoping for something different, but all along you know it’s going to take some actual action on your part. Together Pangea recognize this truism and confront it on their new single, ‘Money On It’.

Coming from their forthcoming Bulls and Roosters via NETTWERK, the track finds singer William Keegan surveying a problematic relationship and finally deciding to address it head on. Despite the trying theme, it actually finds hope in honesty: “I put my money on it/ I put my money on you/ We can talk until we talk it out/ Or we can work until, yeah baby, until we work it out.”

Musically, ‘Money On It’ is a far janglier Together Pangea than fans have heard before, something that was only hinted at on previous single ‘Better Find Out’. There’s an almost beach sway in the rhythm that the guitars stroll lightly across. The rich vibes mixed with scratchy vocals show more of the continued evolution the band has been undergoing through 2014’s Badillac and 2015’s The Phage EP. That’s because, as Keegan explains to Consequence of Sound, Together Pangea made a concerted effort to not let themselves be crippled by waiting for things to change.

Sälen announce show at The Sunflower Lounge

July 13, 2017 in News

Sälen today reveal their brand new video for ‘So Rude’ and announce their first ever UK headline tour this October. Directed by London-based Kent Hugo aka Hugonought, the video features CGI versions of the band in a vivid and hallucinatory 3G world. “Nothing turns us off more than a person with bad manners,” say Sälen. “But nothing turns us on more than airy whale sounds. We’re super excited for everyone to see the video”.

‘So Rude’ is the latest in a string of acerbic pop tracks by the east London trio of Ellie Kamio, Paul Taylor and Simon Milner. They introduced themselves last year with the straight-talking ‘I’m In Love With My Best Friend’; ‘Diseasey’, which topped Spotify UK’s Viral 50 chart; the acclaimed ‘The Drwg’; and urban dictionary favourite ‘Copper Kiss’. Already in 2017 they’ve dropped the acclaimed, bittersweet ‘Heartbreak Diet’ and ‘Pretty, Fake’. The band have sold out headline shows at London’s Kamio and Electrowerkz, and appeared at Annie Mac’s AMP night at the Jazz Cafe and BBC Introducing’s event at the Roundhouse, as well as The Great Escape and Parklife festivals in recent weeks.
