TOY+ THE PROPER ORNAMENTS + THE GRAFHAM WATER SAILING CLUB
We’re very pleased to be welcoming TOY to Birmingham, following the release of their second album Join The Dots on Heavenly Recordings last December. The quintet will be stopping at The Rainbow on Fri 21st February, before their biggest UK show to date at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire this spring.
TOY is a Korg Delta led, London based five-piece whose musical influences incorporate a wide range of genres including punk, early electronic music, psychedelia, post punk, krautrock, kosmische, post rock, musique concrete and folk to name a few.
“Sonic Youth, New Order, Ride, and, as ever, Neu! spring readily to mind. However…it is this intrepid combo’s assembly of these disparate echoes into something of their own that takes them ever closer to the pantheon of greats. Join The Dots is another exhilarating leap in that direction” - MOJO ****
“Join The Dots’ maintains TOY’s stance as masters of creativity, then controls and expands it” - NME 8/10 – ‘Album Of The Week’

Plus support from THE PROPER ORNAMENTS
London-based indie pop duo The Proper Ornaments formed in 2005 when James Hoare, guitarist for Veronica Falls, met up with Argentinian musician Max Clapps in a women’s clothing store. The two bonded over a mutual love of the Velvet Underground, Love, the Left Banke, and the Beach Boys. Their sound also gathered in elements of classic U.K. indie pop with plenty of languidly jangling guitars. After planning and playing when they could due to Hoare’s busy schedule, and adding a full band (drummer Ralph Phillips, bassist Michael Lovett and Let’s Wrestle’s Wesley Patrick Gonzalez), they released their first single, ‘Recalling’, for the San Francisco label Make a Mess in 2010. They followed it up with an eponymous five-song EP for No Pain in Pop in 2011 and in 2013, album, ‘Waiting for the Summer’, for Lo Recordings.
“‘Recalling’ [Waiting for the Summer] is the perfect example of how Hoare and Claps seamlessly blend their broad palette of influences into a great piece of pop.” – The Line of Best Fit

TGWSC were born in February 2012. Hailing from the Midlands and drawing both inspirations from Silver Apples to Ricardo Villalobos and comparisons in the dark depths of Joy Division, The Horrors, The Velvet Underground and O Children, this experimental quartet are about to peak in what is a fantastic time for Midlands music with Peace, Swim Deep and Jaws flying the second city flag.
‘Ankara’ is three and a half minutes of squalling psychotronics etched in the finest traditions of a late 80’s New Zealand noise scene, all distressed in all manner of shade-adorned, shadow-playing feedback riffage that hints ever so slightly to a storm lashed Chameleons in an austere post punk wasteland.
